Robert's Healthy Apple Cider is legendary in York Region. Small batch. Big flavour. Every fall, our family hand-picks apples from local orchards and our son transforms them into rich, apple cider — with just the right blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves perfected over the years. Made with care and meant to be shared, it’s the coziest taste of the season. Now you can make your own farm-fresh apple cider at home with his recipe.
Ingredients
- 10 apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves, ground
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- 2 limes, juiced
- 8 cups filtered water
Directions
- In a large pot, combine the apples, cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, lime juice, and water.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, then reduce to a simmer for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are very soft.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Mash the apples with a large spoon to release their juices.
- Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh cheesecloth into a large bowl, pressing to extract as much liquid as possible. Save the solids to make apple chips.
- Serve warm or chilled, garnished with a cinnamon stick or orange slice if desired, or store in an airtight glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
